A few minutes of exercise reduce the risk of cancer. These can be trivial everyday actions such as climbing stairs or shopping.

Few minutes of exercise
reduce the risk of cancer

A contribution by Jürgen Zender

One of my horror ideas is multimorbidity, i.e. the simultaneous presence of two or more chronic diseases or disorders in addition to Parkinson's. This is especially true when it comes to cancer risk. However, an article in the medical magazine this morning calmed me down a bit.

The article deals with a prospective study that examined the influence of physical activity on the incidence of cancer. Using wearable exercise sensors (accelerometers), the researchers were able to collect data from 22.398 participants who reported that they did not exercise.

The mean observation time was 6,7 years and the mean age of the participants was 62 years. During this time, participants averaged 4,5 minutes of vigorous physical activity per day. The study found a significant association between the amount of physical activity and cancer risk: each minute of vigorous physical activity was associated with a 20% reduced risk of all-cause cancer and a 31% reduced risk of exercise-related cancers.

These findings are particularly important for Parkinson's patients because exercise is one of the few non-drug therapies that can help relieve symptoms. The benefits of regular physical activity for this patient group are many: it can help improve muscle strength, promote balance, increase mobility, and... Quality of life to improve overall.

In addition, this study now suggests that regular, vigorous exercise may also reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.

The study points to possible mechanisms by which exercise could reduce cancer risk: by reducing inflammation, improving insulin resistance, changing body composition and affecting sex hormones.

All in all:

  1. Intense exercise may reduce overall cancer risk and risk of exercise-related cancers.
  2. This is particularly relevant for Parkinson's patients, since exercise is an important non-drug form of therapy to relieve symptoms anyway.
  3. For example, in addition to relieving Parkinson's symptoms, table tennis could offer additional health benefits, such as reducing the overall risk of cancer

The Parkinson Journal is now also available as an app. For just €2,89 (€2,99 on iOS) you get a lifetime free subscription, fast loading times, push notifications and an improved typeface.

And best of all: 50% of the income goes as a donation to PingPongParkinson Deutschland eV, 25% goes into the reserve for the foundation of a non-profit Parkinson Verlags gGmbH and only 25% is needed to cover costs. All employees, editors and authors work on a voluntary basis and are therefore free of charge.

By purchasing the app, you are not only doing yourself a favour, but also making a significant contribution to the fact that the partners PingPongParkinson Deutschland eV and the Parkinson Journal can continue to work successfully and independently.
