Parkinson's research needs private donations

I can only unreservedly agree with the following press release from the German Society for Parkinson's and Movement Disorders. The damage that the financial scandal at the German Parkinson's Association has caused to the entire self-help scene can only be imagined. You can only hope that the private donors understand that these are the criminal activities of individual people, while thousands of volunteers in the self-help scene - including and especially at the German Parkinson's Association itself - do work that is indispensable for society free of charge .
On Thursday evening, the media reported on the alleged embezzlement of donations by the former managing director of the German Parkinson Association. V. (dPV), the largest patient association for those affected by Parkinson's.

The German Society for Parkinson's and Movement Disorders (DPG e. V.; https://www.parkinson-gesellschaft.de) and the Parkinson Foundation she founded (https://www.parkinsonstiftung.de) point out that there are no administrative or economic connections to the German Parkinson's Association. “We expressly welcome the clear will of the current management of the dPV and their active contribution to clarifying the events,” said Prof. Dr. med. Joseph Claßen, Leipzig, First Chairman of the DPG. The task of supporting patients through effective organizations is still very important. DPG and the Parkinson Foundation are primarily dedicated to research funding.

Donations and bequests fill a gap in Parkinson's research

“It would be a major setback if the donations and bequests that are so important for Parkinson’s research were to fail due to the current case,” emphasizes Prof. Dr. med. Jens Volkmann, Würzburg, First Chairman of the Parkinson Foundation. In Germany alone, up to 400.000 people are affected by Parkinson's disease. It is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. In some patients it occurs as early as the fourth decade of life, but most often in older people from the sixth decade of life. Although the disease was described more than 100 years ago, the causes and development are not yet sufficiently understood, and there are also no successful methods to stop or reverse the disease process.

Many non-profit organizations in Germany - including the DPG e. V. and the Parkinson Foundation – are urgently dependent on donations and discounts for research funding. Parkinson's disease, which is still incurable and insufficiently treatable, has been the subject of intensive research for years. Germany is one of the leading countries in Parkinson's research. Groundbreaking findings on the development of the disease serve as approaches for new therapies. However, public funding for this basic and translational research is not sufficient to quickly further develop these approaches. Financing gaps can only be covered by private donations. Without this philanthropic source of funding, Parkinson's research would be set back years.
