Aspiration pneumonia and Parkinson's disease

Aspiration pneumonia is considered one of the top three causes of death in Parkinson's disease, and as scary as this may be, it is important to know about it. This type of pneumonia occurs when food or drink enters the lungs. How can this happen? There are two ways: First, during eating or drinking, when some of the ingested food or liquid goes "down the wrong tube," causing coughing. If coughing is not enough, food and liquid can enter the lungs.
