Two new self-help groups
A short news Jurgen Zender

Two self-help groups worth mentioning have recently started.

On the one hand, there is the Facebook community "It wasn't planned that way". The Facebook group only accepts members under the age of 55 and is therefore aimed at the ever-increasing number of people diagnosed with Parkinson's at a young age.

The moderator Nina Juncker, mother, working pharmacist, herself suffering from Parkinson's disease at a young age, knows the problems of these PmPler* only too well from her own experience. *PwP = person with Parkinson's disease

There is the first shock after receiving the diagnosis, which one has to cope with, there are the difficulties in reconciling work, family, friends and illness, or the inhibition threshold to join a self-help group in order to take a look at one's own having an uncertain future in mind and the question "How do I tell my friends, my employer, etc."

So there is enough material for a non-binding exchange of opinions and mutual support in a forum set up especially for this purpose.

We, the Parkinson Journal team, wish Nina every success in her ambitious project.

The next self-help group that was newly founded and which we want to report on is the THS Regulars' table in Munich around the founder Karin Grote.

Within a very short time, the group has grown to 15 members, some of whom have had DBS or are considering undergoing DBS.

The exchange of ideas is extremely important for both sides. For example, some want to know in which clinic you can get the best settings, how the intake of medication has been reduced and then possibly increased again, while others are interested in the risks and possible side effects of such an intervention first-hand.

I am part of this group myself and can only recommend anyone who has already had DBS to look for like-minded people and start their own group.

With the Parkinson Association eV a heavyweight player is emerging in the field of Parkinson's self-help

The increased risk of melanoma in Parkinson's patients has been documented in numerous scientific studies. A first comprehensive meta-analysis was published by Liu and colleagues in the journal Neurology in 2011 and found that people with Parkinson's were more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with melanoma. An important study on this topic was also published in 2010 by John Bertoni and colleagues in ...

Neuro-centered training in everyday life: theme of balance

The sense of balance, also called the vestibular system, is an important part of the human body. It ensures that we control our posture and movements and orientate ourselves in space. The vestibular system works closely with other sensory organs such as the eyes and brain to form a complex network of information that allows us to feel safe in our surroundings...

Why is it so important to stick to mealtimes in people with Parkinson's disease? 1. Drug Interaction: Many Parkinson's patients take levodopa, which works best on an empty stomach. Protein-rich foods can compete with the absorption of levodopa in the gut, which can lead to a reduced effect of the drug. Therefore, it is often recommended to take levodopa at least 30 minutes before a meal or at least ...

Optimized therapy for late motor complications in advanced Parkinson's disease

The therapy of movement disorders in the advanced stage of idiopathic parkinsonian syndrome represents a challenge, as optimizing dopamine treatment does not always produce the expected results. It is therefore crucial to consider more intensive treatment approaches in a timely manner. As soon as signs of an advanced stage become apparent, physicians should immediately provide information about suitable therapy options and familiarize patients with possible treatment options...

The Parkinson-Bot – artificial intelligence now also in the Parkinson Journal

In the circle of the authors and with many acquaintances and friends, whether affected by Parkinson's or not, I discussed for a long time whether we should integrate ChatGPT as a bot into our Parkinsonal Journal. Last but not least, we asked the "Parkinson-Bot" itself about the usefulness and it is amazing how much it reflects the different opinions from the group mentioned above. In ...

Parkinson's? - What is this exactly?

Most people still don't know what to do with the term Parkinson's. Hardly anyone knows which symptoms often make life very difficult for those affected. And if someone ever associates Parkinson's with a symptom, it's most likely tremor. Newly diagnosed people in particular often have major problems understanding their symptoms or their diagnosis with the ...
