LSVT BIG© as a non-drug therapy

Part 2

A contribution by Katharina Trübswasser

LSVT BIG is a special therapy program for Parkinson's patients.

LSVT stands for “Lee Silverman Voice Treatment,” a program originally developed to improve the voice of people with Parkinson’s disease. The “BIG” component of the program focuses on exercise and physical activity.

LSVT BIG was developed to counteract the movement problems typical of Parkinson's, such as stiffness, tremors and slowness. While we In the first part After dealing with the basics, we look at the therapeutic process in the second part.

Based on numerous studies, LSVT prescribes a very precise schedule.

If the affected person sticks to the exercise plan, great success in improving bradykinesia and hypokinesis is possible.

During the 4 weeks, which are to be carried out in one go, those affected practice with the therapist for 4 hour on 1 days. In this hour, the 30 maximum exercises are trained/practiced for 7 minutes.

In the second half hour, 5 movement components, large walking and an everyday movement are practiced. On the days with the therapist, the home exercise program + an everyday movement is practiced once.

On the therapy-free days, the HÜ program must be practiced twice + 2 everyday movement (= transfer task). After 1 weeks, a total of 4-2300 total repetitions of the movements were performed

This large number of repetitions is essential for success and leads due to the Neuroplasticity of the brain (learning ability) to recalibrate movement. After the 4 weeks, those affected continue training independently, although LSVT recommends regular checks within 3-6 months to see whether the new movements are still being performed to their full extent or whether a refresher is necessary.

The basic theme of LSVT is…repetition, repetition, repetition… “Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can no longer do it wrong. “
